A Celebration Focusing on the Rights of Photographers

An idea is in the works by a few people. What we are hoping to accomplish is a peaceful mass photo get together from Coast to Coast City to City Town to Town across Canada and anywhere else to bring attention and awareness to the fact that public photography is not a crime and photographers are not criminals. Lately, in different parts of the world, photographers are being detained and sometimes arrested under the guise of ‘suspicious behaviour’ merely for photographing in public. Photographers are just people with a pastime, a hobby or a job and photography is the means in which we express ourselves. We are guaranteed the right to do so in Canada because it is clearly outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Section 2.b) of the Charter states we as both Canadians and photographers are allowed:
“Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;”

This statement absolutely guarantees our right to express ourselves through photography, and the freedom to publish our photos. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees our right to take photographs in public. That’s right; we can take photos of anything in public and under regular circumstances, as long as no laws are broken while photographing. It is not against the law.

As it stands now, the date for this photo get together is the Second Saturday in September (SSS). This year, that date turns out to be September 10, 2011.

The idea and implementation of this concept came from AcadieLibre, Bambi, casil403, Glenn Euloth (Iguanasan), Grant, Jas_Photo, kat, Marko Kulik, Matt K., all members on the photography forum on Photography.ca. The current thread where this project is being discussed is here and we welcome anyone that wants to help. Registration to that forum is free and if you just want to post relevant info directly to this blog, please go right ahead. (Additional credits to continue shortly).
